Delicious cool treats

What better place to find frozen goodies than in the boutique spots known best to locals? A few finds in the neighborhood:

Delicious Bert & Rocky’s Cream Co.
Hand-made ice cream in award-winning L.A. County Fair flavors including cream cheese chocolate chip and raspberry truffle mudslide.

Also try sherbet-like sorbets in blue moon, teenage mutant ninja turtle and other flavors.

Feeling adventurous? Treat yourself to one of Big Bert’s ice cream sandwiches in a combination called old glory cheesecake (cheese cake ice cream with strawberries and blueberries mixed in) on two fresh chocolate chip cookies. They are simply irresistible.

More wonderful options include Debbie’s double devil’s food delight, an award winning peppermint stick and chocolate fudge Amaretto cheesecake. Yum. Another sure bet, a sugar cone chocolate-dipped, peanut-covered drumstick.

Theron’s Frozen Custard
Beyond the orange groves and nestled on the south side of Redlands next to the historic Barton House on Nevada Street, is the perfect place to slip in for a cool East Coast-style treat: frozen custard.

Frozen custard is denser than ice cream and has 20 percent less air. At Theron’s it comes in two flavors, chocolate and vanilla, with a host of mix-ins including fresh fruit, chocolate goodies, macadamia nuts and cookie dough. Theron’s also offers signature “concretes” (frozen custard blended with a variety of ingredients) and sundaes with names like Hawaiian Betty, which features pineapple, banana, coconut and macadamia nuts, to Zack Attack, a hot fudge, butterscotch and pecan concoction. The shop is small but has ample patio seating with mountain views.

Hours vary by season; April-September hours are Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

21 Choices
The name is 21 Choices, but only six flavors of frozen yogurt are available at any one moment. The toppings are wonderful: chopped candy bars, gorgeous fresh fruit, chocolate goodies, marshmallows and various cookies ... but the yogurt flavors are the real stars.

A recent sampling: java chip, with semi- sweet chocolate chips and fresh coffee; snickerdoodle made with cookie dough and cinnamon; electric berry, made with pineapples, blueberries and raspberries.

Get a free taste; 21 Choices helpers offer spoon-sized samples of each day’s flavors. Our favorite: A tres small in two flavors, a fresh fruit balanced against a rich chocolate or cookie-dough based flavor.
