A few lessons worth remembering
THINGS my mother taught me:
- Eat what’s on your plate.
- Be true to your word.
- Honor God, whatever you conceive him to be.
- Work hard and be honest.
- Say thank-you and please.
- Help others.
- Stepping in puddles while you’re wearing your Sunday best will earn you a whack from an umbrella. (And fancy bamboo umbrella handles break easily.) Things I learned on my own:
- Step over the coffee pot electrical cord.
- A full pot of coffee and grounds can easily cover an entire kitchen floor as well as surrounding walls.
- Do not exit the bathroom by sliding down the drainpipe beside the second-floor window.
- Especially do not lock the bathroom from the inside before exiting the window.
- An umbrella is not a substitute for a parachute.
- Do not whack bees swarming on fallen fruit.
- Do not forget you left the hot pot pie in the TV chair you plan to sit in (especially when wearing thin pajamas).
- Do not rewire electrical appliances without adult supervision.
- Strawberry jam will not improve the taste of scrambled eggs.
- When lining up a new fence, do not forget the post-hole behind you.
- A mother’s love is unconditional.

In this issue we pay tribute to moms with a raft of mother and family stories including ideas for inexpensive outings.

Writer Luanne J. Hunt takes a look at how young mothers are using support groups and Internet resources to improve their parenting skills. Shawna Federoff takes us out with the stroller brigade, and local women recall the most important lessons they learned from their mothers.

Also in this issue:
Mike Brossart offers tips on gardening;

Gino Filippi explores boutique wineries, some of which offer an opportunity to try your hand at wine-making;

A visit with Las Campanas chef Aurelio Guardiola with a recipe for lobster enchiladas; Exploring sushi with Alan Lau at Toro Sushi, Bar & Grill in Ontario; A motorcycle jaunt to Laughlin and beyond as well as our health, diet and fitness departments, community calendar and “Seen” snapshots from local events.

Thanks again mom, and thank-you for supporting our local community groups and businesses.
